THE UKIFC COMMITTEE
Chair: Dr Brian Appelbe
Contact: chair@inertial-fusion.co.uk
Dr Brian Appelbe is a Research Fellow at Imperial College London and chair of the UK IFC.
He has extensive research experience in the theory and computation of Inertial Fusion, with particular expertise in the physics of thermonuclear burn and the application of neutron & nuclear diagnostics to Fusion experiments.
He holds longstanding collaborations with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (home of the NIF laser) and many other institutions engaged in Fusion research, both public and private.
As chair of the UK IFC, Brian seeks to broaden the range of stakeholders in Inertial Fusion in the UK by establishing and enhancing links with related technology fields.

Deputy Chair: Dr Hugo Doyle
Contact: hugo.doyle@firstlightfusion.com
Hugo is the Deputy Chair of the UK Inertial Fusion Consortium and Head of Experimental Physics at First Light Fusion, where he leads teams developing and testing their concepts for inertial fusion energy.
His work spans high-current pulsed-power experiments on First Light’s in-house facilities, ultra-fast diagnostics, and deuterium-tritium fusion experiments, alongside the development of reactor-relevant engineering concepts.
Through his role on the Consortium committee, Hugo aims to help connect the UK’s inertial fusion community across science, technology, and engineering as the field moves from fundamental research towards practical fusion energy systems.
